Adopt a Dog

CAWI takes great pride in matching dogs for adoption with the right homes. We can advise on the dogs’ suitability as we employ a professional dog trainer/handler to give an opinion, as well as having the insight gained by our foster carers.

There is a 3 week trial and cooling off period for you and the dog – if things aren’t working out CAWI will take the dog back. We don’t want any mistakes for you or the dog.

You can find contact details and application forms on the CONTACT US page.

NOTE – Not all of the dogs on this Adopt a Dog page are CAWI rescue dogs. Check the contact details to see whether you need to talk to CAWI or the owner.
Non-CAWI dogs that are looking for new homes are also advertised on the PRIVATE SURRENDERS page.

Shayla

Shayla is a Rhodesian ridgeback crossbreed (she doesn’t look like one but that is what she is registered as!!!) that was rescued from the pound. She has had a small amount of training, loves water and has shown no signs of aggression towards people or other dogs. The Byron rangers who have been caring for her and the local vets commented that she is really delightful and a very happy soul. Shayla will be going to her foster families on 23rd Feb, so we will keep you updated.

Rodney and Silky

Rodney and Silky are 3 year old Silky terriers that were rescued and need a permanent new home. They are both rather timid at the moment, and are not used to being allowed inside, but they are coming around slowly. These two dogs are an “item”. CAWI will be looking for a double-adopter to maintain their connection.

Jazz

Jazz was rescued by CAWI at the death… literally. Jazz was about to put to sleep because her owners had to move, could not take her with them and they hadn’t managed to find her a home. The vet nurse rang CAWI because she knows Jazz and vouched for her suitability for rehousing. Jazz has turned out to be a real sweety, and puts up with a bossy male shitzue giving her what for at HIS house. She turns her head and tries her best to ignore this pesky boy, but it must make her miserable to have lost her home and now to be bullied by a bossy boots shitzue.

Jazz has never lived with a cat or small children, has a soft personality and absolutely adores driving in a car and going for walks. She is used to having another dog for company – her old mate died last year and she apparently missed him greatly. Would be very suitable as a companion for a nice natured dog.

Tasha

This gorgeous girl is an intelligent young dog who relishes human company and loves kids. She has never bitten or even growled at a human, but can certainly be overzealous in the licking dept. Tasha loves swimming, ball fetching, tug of war and any game you can think of. She will normally walk by your side without a lead on, isn’t a barker at all and is fine if left on her own for a few hours. Tasha is an energetic girl who likes to keep fit and active.

Annie

Annie is young dog found on the streets. She has done her time at the pound and is now in the hands of a CAWI foster carer. Annie has been observed to be very smart, well behaved, good looking (goes without saying) and loves the company of humans and dogs alike.  Annie has her own toys which she loves to toss around and play with all by herself. She loves a snuggle and has a cheerful nature. This little cutie would make a terrific family dog or companion dog.

Update: Annie has been adopted and is in her trial period as of 24th Feb 2012

Marni

Marni is a good looking, sleek, fit and lively one year old female kelpie. This young girl’s owner had to move away, and couldn’t take her. After a few weeks staying with various friends, Marni has been surrendered to CAWI as she needs a more settled life. She has a working dog heritage (both parents are working kelpies), and would be well suited to life on a property, or perhaps somewhere where there is another dog to play with - she likes to keep busy. She is super-friendly towards people and dogs, but cats and chickens would be advised to steer clear. She already knows some basic commands.

If you can offer a foster home for Marnie she would be most grateful.  Being stuck in a kennel is not her idea of fun.

Henry

Henry is a smart dog and has a big personality, and a gentle affectionate nature. Everyone who meets him is totally smitten. His previous owners have had him since he was 6 months old. He is very friendly and great with kids although he can sometimes be a bit too demonstrative for very little ones. He absolutely adores other dogs and human companionship so a good home for  him would either be with another dog or with someone who is at home a lot (or perhaps a tradie/farmer who takes the dog to work).

He’s fine with livestock, but chooks are a bit of a temptation. He can get frightened of people sometimes if they come into the yard without warning – he really is a bit of an all-round sook – he’s also afraid of heights and holes.

Henry doesn’t try to escape the yard, but would need a fenced area at least to start with. He mostly prefers to stay where he last saw his owners to wait for them to return.  We are looking for a an owner with good voice command.

Henry is need of a foster home where he can be loved and made to feel part of the family until we find him a new home – see our Help Us page for details of how our foster carer scheme works.

Isabelle

Isabelle (or Little Miss Perfect as her foster mum calls her) is a highly intelligent Border Collie x Kelpie puppy that was reluctantly surrendered. She is an adoring and adorable young girl who loves people, kids and other dogs. She is especially fond of skinny-dipping, and is a superb swimmer. This fit and lithe young girl would really appreciate living on a property and having another dog to play with.  Issy is a sensitive young dog who doesn’t like loud noises, but adores cuddles- isn’t fond of being left outdoors on her own any more since her accident, but is easy to have around as she is such a quiet girl. Issy will fetch a ball and loves to learn new tricks. For a dog so young she is absolutely the easiest dog to look after, but definitely is suited to a farm or life style where she can play with another like minded dog or kids.

NB – Isabella is unavailable for adoption until the 8th of Feb.  Izzy had an accident on Christmas Day and broke her leg.

Update 19/2/12 Izzy is now on trial

Rupee

Rupee’s gentle nature, good manners and excellent demeanour are sure to impress the most discerning dog owner. Rupee’s owner has passed away and she went straight into foster care. Her carers swiftly realised they had an absolute treasure to mind. They made up their minds to not let her go and were very happy to adopt Rupee… until some bad news brought all their plans to a halt. Rupee is now available for adoption once more and whoever decides to adopt her will be getting an absolute treasure of a dog.

Scruffy

Scruffy is loveable little fella who is residing with a CAWI foster family and their recently adopted CAWI dog Sandy. Scruffy is intimidated by big boy dogs, but loves girl dogs and getting lots of cuddles. He is as cute as a button and gets on well with the foster family’s dog but is known not to tolerate cats.

9/2/12 looks like Scruffy has a new home with his Foster Family. Just needs formalising.
